FISHING NEWS!
The weather STILL seems to be a thorn in the side of anglers in the area. Early week was as good as it gets, but later in the week, and in time for the weekend, the wind started blowing; the clouds moved in and a miserable storm system moved in and stayed. Early in the week proved productive for offshore anglers. On Tuesday, the 'Crikey', captained by Tom Malewski worked the draggers and managed one Longfin Tuna in the Washington plus one Dolphin. On Wednesday, Captain Tommy guided the 'Crikey' south of the Poormans in 40 fathoms and found a temperature break--68 degrees on one side of the weed line and 74 degrees on the other. Larry Sines Jr., age 13, from Milford caught his first White Marlin at 82 lbs and also caught a 78 lb Yellowfin Tuna. The crew ended the day with one for two on White Marlin, some nice dolphin, and went four for six on Yellowfin. Tommy and party caught the tuna drift chunking with live mullet. Dan Langdon, Bill Biffel, and Glen Perrine trolled the Baltimore and boated a 60 lb Yellowfin, 8 gaffers Dolphin, and lost two more tuna. We also had a late offshore report from October 4 from Paul Hall who fished on board the Lynn Marie. They fished Massey's Canyon and reported catching several big bluefish, a couple of sharks, and a Skip Jack Tuna while chunking.
We had a couple of reports that tau tog fishing has started to pick up at the Outer Wall in Delaware Bay. Martin McQuaide reported a catch of 20 to 25 large croakers at the Shears, the Beach Ball, and Brown Shoals. Martin used squid to entice the hard heads to bite. The fishing pier at Cape Henlopen is still yielding a few fish. Rob Kriner and friends reported small stripers and flounder at night.
Stan 'The Noodleman' reported a catch of 35 stripers off the beach at Cape Henlopen. Stan fished long and hard and walked a mess of miles while casting plugs into the suds to manage so many fish. He said that a guy fly-fishing also did well at the Point. Stan's largest fish was 30 inches. Debby from Bill's and her husband DJ fished the surf around Cape Henlopen and caught loads of blues, but all were pretty small and were released to grow a little larger!
Indian River Inlet has been pretty strong for tog fishing. Diver Gene and Ron from Bill's have been fishing the rocks with green crabs and have managed a few keepers, but have thrown a lot more back. Captain Dennis of the 'Fin-Fitz' has been fishing the IRI and reports good bluefish action on bucktails with white twisters. Dennis also reported stripers on spot during daylight hours. He says that the rock fishery should really start to pick up as water temperatures continue to drop. Dennis saw a citation winning tog being hauled up out of the inlet. Lynn Doster emailed us that Indian River was very active over last weekend with tog. Lynn said she saw between 200-300 fish caught in three days. Most were 12 to 14 inches. She did see a few fish over 20" brought in over the rail as well as a few stripers with the larger ones being reeled in by boaters fishing live spot at slack tide. Lynn fished Sites 9, 10-13 and 'B' buoy managing to boat a few short trout while being bounced around by rough seas.
The 2nd Annual Striper Festival and Tournament is getting a few more weigh-ins. First place is now held by local fisherman Timmy Barnett. Timmy weighed in an 18.94 lb striper that he nailed in IRI on live spot. Ron Boyer dropped to 2nd place, but also holds 3rd!
