Assawoman Wildlife
Area Regulations
Assawoman Wildlife Area is the busiest wildlife area in the state because of the numerous recreational opportunities it offers boaters, picnickers, crabbers, bicyclists, hikers, birdwatchers, hunters and motorists.
The Wildlife Area, however, is not a state park. Wildlife comes first here -- outdoor recreation comes second. Entry to the Wildlife Area is free as it is funded by federal excise taxes on guns, ammunition, archery, fishing and boating equipment.
Wildlife areas are managed for the needs of native animals and plants. Most management efforts are geared toward habitat protection and enhancement. In Assawoman Wildlife Area, several rare plants are located in the wet, wooded areas, and an endangered species, the Delmarva Fox Squirrel, lives in the refuge area.
Following are the Wildlife Area's regulations:
- The use of non-registered vehicles is prohibited in any wildlife area. All other vehicles may only use designated roads, not exceed 20 miles per hour, and not make excessive noise.
- No one may trespass into areas closed by the Division of Fish and Wildlife.
- Assawoman Wildlife Area is closed from sunset to 7 a.m. All visitors must leave promptly at sunset. You may not wait until last light.
- Firearms are prohibited except during legal hunting seasons.
- No dumping or littering. The dumpster at the intersection of Strawberry Landing Road in not intended for home trash.
- Horses may only be used on established roads open to vehicles except for activities approved by the Division of Fish and Wildlife.
- Camping or swimming is prohibited except with special authorization.
- Dogs must be properly licensed before entering state lands.
- Pavilion use is first come, first served. No reservations will be taken.
