Beach-Net! Guide to the Delaware-Maryland Beaches

STOP 11
Bat Roost Boxes

The boxes above are bat roost boxes. The small crack on the bottom provides access. Bats rest during the day in the cavities and under loose bark. They usually roost in warm, dark, undisturbed areas near a major source of food -- in this case, insects.

Bats are most active at night and a big, brown bat is capable of eating from 3,000-7,000 mosquitoes per hour.
