Beach-Net! Guide to the Delaware-Maryland Beaches

STOP 4
Wood Duck Nest Box,
Effects of Fire

Photo: A Wood Duck Nest Box

On the left are examples of the impact fire has had on the area. Phragmites, a large plant known for crowding out native wetland plants, have been sprayed and burned.

The fire didn't affect the fire-resistant loblolly , but it damaged the thin-barked American Holly.

Fire also helps maintain an open understory favored by Delmarva fox squirrels and bobwhites.

On the right, you'll see the Wood Duck Nest Box. The metal cone under the box is a predator guard that prevents raccoons and snakes from killing the birds and eggs.

Screech Owls, Northern Flickers, Starlings, and Prothonotary Warblers use the boxes, too.

You might also see loafing logs within viewing distance of the road. They attract turtles, frogs, muskrats and dragonflies.
