Beach-Net! Guide to the Delaware-Maryland Beaches

STOP 5
Ponds

These ponds have been created by damming tidal creeks and trapping the fresh water. Plants and aquatic insects flourish here and also attract hungry waterfowl.

By exposing the pond bottom in the spring, plants such as Saltmarsh Bulrush, Dwarf Spikerush and Wigeongrass are able to grow.

A well floods the ponds and keeps the water salinities low. Wading birds, shorebirds and birds of prey also frequent these areas.
