Beach-Net! Guide to the Delaware-Maryland Beaches

STOP 7
Delmarva Fox Squirrel

Once common on the Delmarva Peninsula, the Delmarva Fox Squirrel is now an endangered species.

The population here was trapped wild in Maryland and transplanted in 1984. They are surviving and reproducing, but because only 12 squirrels were released here in '84, they are still protected.

Red signs and paint mark the fox squirrel refuge, which is off-limits to all but the squirrels and other animals. You will also see waterfowl food plots, goose pastures, small woodland ponds, an impoundment, and nest boxes for the rest of the refuge.
