The barrier island of Assateague beguins just south of Ocean City, Maryland, and extends all the way down to Chincoteague, Virginia, some 37 miles long with the widest point being three miles accross.
The fence at the state line separates the two herds of ponies. On its northern end lies Assateague State Park, managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and The Assateague Island National Seashore, managed by the National Park Service.
The Southern end is also managed by the National Park Service with Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. On the southern end is the Chincoteague Refuge Vistor Center and the Tom's Cove Visitors Center. (Click here to go to Refuge Information)
