Fishing Report

(January 16 - 23, 2001)

Water Temp: Lewes - Lewes: 33' ~ De. Lightship: 41' as of Jan. 16, 2001

Steve Glanden weighed in an 11Lb Tau Tog caught 28 miles from the Indian River Inlet on crabs.

While we wait for the water temperature to reach 48' and the arrival of the first mackerel of the year, we'll discuss techniques for catching fish while trolling the buoy lines.

You can pretty much count on Mothers Day as the official arrival of schools of slammer blues between 8 and 15 pounds. The water temperature is close to 60'. I troll between 4 and 6 knots while Bill puts long lines out far behind the boat. Many times you'll get 3 or 4 knock downs at the same time. Look for the birds and work a circle around the school, don't go through the school as it will chase the fish down.

Blues will hit many kinds of lures, we troll rag mops, hootchies and pony tails made with luma flex material which is resistant to teeth marks. Surgical tubing and cedar plugs are also popular.

As the water temperature rises, offshore fishing picks up and Bonita, False Albacore,King Mackerel, Dolphin and an occasional Wahoo appear between "A" Buoy and the Delaware light ship. Most all of these species love Feathers , Green Machines and cedar plugs while the Kings like to hit spoons trolled deep. Wahoo seem to love to hit rigged Ballyhoo also.

Next week we'll take you further off shore for Mako and Tuna action.
