This week our surf fishing expert, Bill Weiss ,will give his tips on how to catch fish in the suds. Surf fishing is enjoyed from April to November with the best bite in the early morning and just before dusk.

The best bet for getting an edge is the use of braided line such as power pro 30Lb test or mono line with a thin diameter between 14 and 20Lb test. When using mono line, a shock leader of 40 or 50Lb may be necessary. The resulting sensitivity of these lines will result in a lot more hookups. By using a braided line you will also be able to use less weight to hold the bottom, going from a 4 or 5 ounce pyramid to 3 or 4 ounces or less.

Whenever possible, use fresh bait, normally whichever bait is prevelant in the surf. Present your fresh bait about every 15 minutes. Baits will vary with the season and varieties of the fish.

Bloodworms: I use just the barest amount to cover the hook.
Peeler Crab: use a mesh bag or my preference, magic thread to help keep the soft crab meat on the hook.
Mullet: Be sure to scale it first and then fillet, undulate on the hook or use whole mullet rigs when using the whole mullet.Scaling allows the fish oils to be released into the water thus attracting more fish to your hook.
Squid: Cleaned and cut into long triangles, undulate on hook.
Sea Clams: Cut into strips, Magic thread will help keep the strips on the hook.
Sand Fleas: Put three or four on the hook and hook between the shallow body up through the shell.
