Fishing Report

(April 16, 2001)

Water Temp: Lewes - Lewes: 49 ~ De. Lightship: 44' as of April 16, 2001

Reports from Ocean City, Indian River and Lewes indicate that Mackerel are here in great numbers as close as 5 miles off the beach. Don and Donnie Culver weighed in Mackerel up to 1.82 Lbs , caught between A and B buoy. Typically the main schools of atlantic mackerel move rapidly up the coast so don't waste time getting out if you expect to get in on the action. The annual run officially opens the saltwater fishing season.

Stripers are providing good action in the Indian River back bay hitting bombers, rebels and bucktails. Ted Mears caught a 26-1/2 " striper at 8B buoy in the mouth of the Delaware Bay on live eels. Stripers are being caught at Overfalls shoals on bucktails. Eddie Jarrell landed a striper on a rebel at Massey's Ditch. Skates and scattered reports of stripers are coming in from the surf at 3 R's road.

Tog are biting on inshore and offshore wrecks. Green Crabs are now available at tackle shops.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries commission has ordered states to slash the recreational catch of summer flounder. Flounder fishing is closed in Delaware until May 26th. The meeting May 1st at the DNREC auditorium in Dover is to decide the bag limit and size limit. Anyone interested in these regulations should attend this meeting. Several proposals will be presented, a bag limit of three at 17-1/2" and an open season all year. A bag limit of 5 at 17" and a season from May 26th to September 4th. A bag limit of 5 at 16-1/2" and a season from May 26th to Mid August.

Turtle excluders are now available to comply with the new regulations.
