Fishing Report

Water Temp: Lewes - Lewes: 60 ~ De. Lightship: 56' as of May 21, 2001

Fishing season is in high gear! Good numbers of large trout have been reported from Bowers Beach to the Lewes Pier. Jimmy Wells, Greg Hawkins and Jack Parsons nailed trout up to 5 Lbs. at the Broadkill on the river side. Brad Wingo weighed in a 5-1/4Lb Flounder on a minnow at the Broadkill, Bob Robinsky and Megan hooked up 4 keeper Trout on peelers. In fact, most of the keeper Trout were caught on live peeler crab. Anthony Baker and Cecil Bailey caught a 60 Lb black drum on sea clams at the Coral Beds. John Christian brought a 10-1/2Lb. Black Drum to the scales caught at the Broadkill on a peeler. Mike Bowen used Fin S jigs and hooked up 4 keeper Flounder from the pier at Cape Henlopen. Jack Spencer caught Blues and Flounder on jigs,Shiners, chicken, squid and minnows.

At the Lewes Beach and Roosevelt Inlet, Flounder and Trout are hitting jigs and Peeler Crabs.

Dave Wright and Steven Daggett boated stripers up to 23 Lbs., nice size trout and keeper flounder at Brown Shoals on bucktails, Squid and eels. Nathan Tanner fished shallow water in the De. Bay and brought in 6 trout up to 8.87 Lbs. using Fin-S jigs.

Tim Barnett and Scott Hovatter drifted the outer wall and picked up 4 stripers up to 15 Lbs on bucktails. "Bud " caught a 25-1/2" striper and 4 trout up to 20" in the Roosevelt Inlet.

The Indian River Inlet turned on with stripers this week . Kerry Lodish caught 2 on eels and Tim Barnett , Brian Salisbury and Tom White all limited out on stripers up to 15 lbs. on bucktails and Mega Baits.

Bill Kulp and Lenny Fritz trolled in the back bay and boated 2 - 20" flounder on silver and blue bombers.

On the offshore scene, 8 to 12 Lb. bluefish were boated by the "pandemonium". Captain Steve said they were hitting Maws Hoochies and Rag Mops and that he was trolling the buoy line. Gary Meyers reported a 208 Lb Thresher Shark caught aboard the "Captain Ike" while sharking in the fingers.

Ocean wrecks, the outer wall , inner wall of the De Bay and the rocks at thje Indian River Inlet and also the rocks at Massey's Ditch are producing Tau Tog. Harold Blackburn weighed in a 9.2 Lb. Tog caught on green crabs while fishing an Ocean Wreck. Paul Collison and Shane Olsen brought in a 5.87 lb flounder out of the Indian River .

Surf fishing also picked up this week with a 26" striper and 14" blues caught on mullet soaked in peeler oil by Steve Best.

Paul Hazzard weighed in a 3.4 Lb largemouth bass from Burton Pond caught on a chartreuse and white spinner.

A three day, trolling only, blue fish tournament is being held by the Indian River Boating Association on May 26,27,28. This is a fish two out of three day event allowing for a bad weather day or your choice of two days. First prize is 50% of the pot and the entrance fee is only $50.00 per boat. Applications for this tournament are available at Bill's Sport Shop.

New starting this weekend we can be heard on the "WAVE" 92.1FM on Friday morning and on Saturday morning with an up to date fishing report , also as we have been doing for years ,every day , three times a day you can hear Captain Bill on WGMD 92.7.FM 7:10AM, 5:10PM and again at 7:10PM.

Please proceed with caution when navigating the Massey's Ditch area and the Indian River, markers should be in place by the Memorial Day Weekend. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend.
