FISHING REPORT
FROM
KATHY BAKER at BILL'S SPORT SHOP
After a severe collision with the steamship WASHINGTONIAN the ELIZABET PALMER was still partially afloat at noon of January 26, 1915, but all headgear gone according to J.S. Pruit of the Indian River Lifeboat who rode out to the wreck.
Two days later a wireless message received from the revenue cutter MOHAWK, said that the five masted schooner of Portland Maine, capsized today and is now breaking up. The crew had been rescued at the time of the collision and the MOHAWK was towing her into the Delaware breakwater when she capsized.
The ELIZABETH PALMER also collided and sank the ESTELLE PHINNEY on December 27, 1907 off of Barnegat, N.J. The ELIZABETH PALMER was one of the great coal schooners of Maine and was sailing from Portland , Maine to Norfolk, Va. to pick up a load of coal. The master at the time of sinking was Captain George A. Carlisle of Boothbay Harbor Maine. 14 persons were on board including Mrs. John Andrews, wife of the steward.
The bow sits upright and about 12 feet off the sand with two anchor chains and anchors. The Coast Guard dynamited the wreck shortly after the mishap, large timbers remain but are scattered. It lies in 72 feet and is in three general sections. This wreck is known by charter captains to be plentiful with Tau Tog and Sea Bass.
