FISHING REPORT
FROM
BILL WEISS at BILL'S SPORT SHOP

Bill Weiss has been an employee here at Bill's Sport Shop for the last four years and is an avid surf fisherman. Bill started fishing the Delaware coast with his father close to fifty years ago. Fort Miles was one of their favorite locations along with many of the beaches that are still popular today. What follows is a brief summary from his memory and additional research on how the state arrived at naming these locations. He originally fished by the old bridge that crossed the Indian River Inlet and also from the old jetty metal structure at the Roosevelt Inlet.

On September 2, 1798 a ship named the Faithfull Steward ,sailing from Ireland to Philadelphia with 249 immigrants aboard ran aground on a shoal that was just 100 yards from the beach and north of the Indian River Inlet. After a strong storm or Nor'easter many treasure hunters have found Irish Coppers that wash up on this beach which is now known as Coin Beach.

At the two active life saving stations, refered to today as Coast Guard Stations, one located in Rehoboth and the other was located in Bethany Beach, the sailors patrolled the beaches in between. In Order to insure that the sailors did the required distance and not rest behind a sand dune, a box was positioned halfway between the two stations. The guard from each station would be required to leave his key in the box and pick up the other key which he would then carry back to the other station. This crossing area that we fish today is called Key Box Rd.

In 1884, a station was opened that was called the Delaware Breakwater Quarantine Station. This station was used to examine and keep immigrants and crews that were comming into the United States and the station was kept in use until 1926. This area is now known as Cape Henlopen State Park.

Just North of the town of Bethany Beach sat a small school house that served the children of this area. Although it no longer stands, we still recognize that fishing spot as 3R's Road.

FISHING: Believe it or not, we still have stripers being caght at the Indian River Inlet and some of them are decent in size.White bucktails and white worms are the choice of the day.

Tim Barnett caught 11 of them by jigging bucktails.
