Lewes, Delaware Fishing Report
May 8-14, 1997

As everywhere else, anglers in the Lewes area are anxiously awaiting the traditional Mother's Day weekend boom.

Leading up to Mother's Day, Capt. Bill Baker of Bill's Sport Shop reported that offshore boats had been catching Stripers and Tautog when the wind didn't prevent them from going out.

Keeper Stripers were caught at 8A Buoy in Delaware Bay while 'Tog were taken from the wrecks and from Indian River Inlet. One angler, John Heverly, hooked a 5-pound 'Tog at Indian River on green crabs.

Fishermen at the Navy jetty, meanwhile, reported catching Bluefish on white bucktails and twisters. There were also scattered catches of Trout and Flounder at the Cape Henlopen State Park Fishing Pier. And "Big Tom" ran into some undersized Stripers at Gordon's Pond Crossing.

In the fresh water, 8-year-old Erin Korman landed a 3 7/8-pound Largemouth Bass on minnows at Silver Lake.

In the surf, the Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce Surf Fishing Tournament wasn't as productive as usual because of the weather, but several fishermen did bring home prizes. John Price and Doug Davidson tied for the largest fish with a pair of 14-inch Kingfish to split the top prize. Each man took home $500.

Price, meanwhile, won $750 for the most points. Gary Born was second and won $500, John Dixsen won $350 for finishing third, and Phil Dowdell placed fourth to earn $150. Scott Aiken placed third in the largest fish category with a 13-inch Kingfish.
