Lewes, Delaware Fishing Report
July 24-30, 1997

With Bluefin Tuna regulations relaxed, Tuna fishing has provided plenty of thrills for area fishermen the past week.

Chunking the Fingers, Ham Bone, Hot Dog and Massey's Canyon proved to be most successful, according to Capt. Bill Baker of Bill's Sport Shop.

Mark Christianson, Tom Halvlakos and Jim Downey, chunking aboard the 7 Cs at the Hot Dog, reeled in 3 Bluefin and 1 Yellowfin Tuna.

Not to be outdone, Dennis Mentzer and Kenny Hall, chunking at the Fingers on the Painter Place, caught 7 Tuna.

Steve Abell landed a 90-pounder and four 45-pound Tuna chunking at the Ham Bone, Tom Casner hooked 4 Bluefin aboard Get the Net chunking at Massey's Canyon, and Rich Rothenberger and crew, aboard the Shooting Star, found Tuna and lots of Sea Bass and Flounder on two ocean trips.

In the Delaware Bay, Flounder and Trout were the highlights.

Jerry Wehr caught 3 Flounder and 2 Bluefish on minnows and squid at the Anchorage, Russel Johnston weighed in a 6-pound Flounder taken on minnows and squid at the Breakers, Charles Smith caught Trout on minnows and squid at the Breakers, and Frank Mayhorn limited out on Trout using peeler crabs at Bennett's Pier.

The Cape Henlopen State Park Pier continues to produce spot on bloodworms and small Trout and Flounder on squid and minnows.

In the surf, anglers are finally catching their fill of fish, with Kingfish, Trout, Bluefish, Blowfish and Sharks comprising the menu.

Steve Kiebler, fishing Haven Road with softshell crabs, caught 3 Kingfish and a Trout on one trip.

Indian River Inlet remained hot, especially for local angler Don Halverson. On three trips, Halverson landed a 21-pound citation Striper, an 11-pound Striper, and two 4-pound Trout, all on live eels.

In fact, several other anglers also brought back nice Stripers from the inlet.

John Mattson caught a 19-pounder and Rocco Mastroserio a 35-inch Striper, both on live eels. Frank Brown used a black and silver Windcheater to reel in an 18-pound Rockfish, and "Tip Top Van" weighed in a 32-incher caught on a plug and a 29-incher caught on a red and white Bomber.

And finally, Dan Dennerlein of Bill's Sport Shop and Wally Borgmann trekked to Cape Charles, Va., where they caught a 25-pound Cobia last week.
