Lewes, Delaware Fishing Report
June 5-11, 1998

Kathy Baker of Bill's Sport Shop echoes the sentiments of many local anglers when she calls current fishing conditions "the best fishing in many years."

All around the Lewes area, fishermen are filling up coolers and stringers with everything from Flounder and Trout to Black Drum.

On Lewes Beach, Cindy and Dale Nauman caught 13 keeper Flounder between them, as well as 4 Trout. They used squid, but chicken and peeler crabs have also been productive.

In the Roosevelt Inlet, Mike Cromwell weighed in a dandy 9-pound Flattie caught on a white bucktail with minnows. Byron Farmer also nailed a big fish there, reeling in an 8-pound Trout on the incoming tide with chicken. And Gary Nureck caught 3 Flounder there on peelers.

The Delaware Bay is teeming with all kinds of fish, including Flounder, Trout, Stripers, Ling Cod, Drum and Tautog, Baker says.

Joe Catalino and Randy Gooner both weighed in Black Drum, with Gooner returning with a 63-pounder from the Coral Beds and Catalino bringing back a 52.5-pounder. Both fish bit clams.

The "Bones Bunch" and Bob McLennon hit lots of Flounder and Tautog at the Outer Wall while Joe Kepper weighed in a 7-pound and a 7.5-pound Trout taken on a white bucktail.

The Outer Wall also produced citation Tautog for James Harris Jr., Mike Nowacki and Bob Gingrich on green crabs and sand fleas.

Broadkill Beach yielded an 8-pound Weakie for Bud Carlson. He used chicken.

The Cape Henlopen State Park Pier continues hot with Flounder, Trout, Bluefish, Stripers and Sharks, Baker says.

Rob Kriner weighed in a 5-pound Trout caught on a Maw's Lime Wedge and Glenn Shoener brought in a 3.5-pound Flounder caught on squid. Brian Elliott and Brenda Olsen, using green jigs and shiners, caught a variety of keepers.

Even surf fishing picked up a little this week. At 3 Rs Road just south of Indian River Inlet, Nick Trampos enjoyed catching a 5-foot Sand Shark. Others landed Snapper Blues and undersize Stripers on mullet.

In the ocean, sand fleas brought Frank Tier a 3.75-pound Sea Bass. Jim Clarence and Gus nailed 9 Bluefish up to 13 pounds while chunking at the Lightship. On another trip, they brought up 3 Thresher Sharks at the Pimple. Slammer Blues are being caught on the troll at the Southeast Grounds. And Greg O'Donnell and family caught large Sea Bass, Flounder and Sand Sharks on squid and minnows at the hot "B" Buoy.

Indian River Inlet and Rehoboth Bay are both producing nice Flounder, including the 7 Flounder caught by Bob Griener and Doug Wertzel at Massey's Ditch.
