Beach-Net! Guide to the Delaware-Maryland Beaches

Windsurfing at the
Delaware-Maryland Beaches

The Delaware-Maryland coast provides some of the best windsurfing conditions along the entire East Coast, whether you're just learning or ready to take on the Atlantic Ocean.

Ocean City, Maryland
Ocean City offers a great variety of windsurfing conditions in both the ocean and the bays, although the high rise buildings along the ocean-front will block winds coming from land. But if the wind is blowing out of the south, the ocean sailing is fantastic.

In the bays, except after major storms you'll find clean water because the ocean flushes through the Ocean City Inlet and into the bays. The water in the bay is also shallow with a clean bottom, making it ideal for beginners. Nearby Assateague Island also offers outstanding ocean and bay windsurfing but without the buildings to block the wind.

Just about the best windsurfing venue in town is Mellow Beach Yacht Club at 46th Street. Lessons and equipment rentals are offered. Windsurfers like the grass rigging area, which prevents sand from fouling up the rigging process.

Dewey Beach, Delaware
The Rehoboth Bay in Dewey Beach tends to offer a wilder time for windsurfers who like to jump waves and whitecaps. Several locations in town offer windsurfing lessons and equipment rentals. Another popular spot is the state park beach on the bayside on Route 1 just south of town.
